Gauff has started the year well. After the initial disappointment of losing in the second round in the Australian Open she made amends by doing well in the tournaments that followed. She reached the Semi-finals of the Adelaide International and then the Quarter-finals of the Dubai Open.
Gauff has started well on the clay courts as well, she overcame a tricky first round clash against Tsvetana Pironkova, winning with relative ease 6-3 6-0. In the second round she beat Ludmilla Samsonova in three sets. What stood out was how Gauff converted close to half of her break points, five out of eleven in total.
Her third round opponent is Lauren Davis. Davis is known as a clay court specialist, and did her reputation no harm by beating the second seed Sofia Kenin in her second round encounter, where she won in three sets 4-6 6-3 6-4. She had beaten Madison Brengle in straight sets in the first round.
