Rogers has done well in the majors this season. She had reached the Quarter-finals of the US Open, and then again the fourth round of the Australian Open. She was also a Quarter-finalist at the Adelaide International that followed the Australian Open.

In the just concluded Miami Open she was beaten in the second round by Elina Svitolina 6-3 5-7 3-6. Shelby took on and beat Kristina Mladenovic, 6-4 6-3, in the first round of the Charleston event. In the second round she will face Amanda Anisimova.

Anisimova missed the whole Australian Summer after testing positive with Covid. Post that, her return to tour has not been a very successful one. She lost in the round of thirty-two in both the Dubai Open and the Miami Open. In the first round at Charleston 2021 she beat Magda Linette in three sets, 5-7 6-2 6-3.

Her powerful game complimented by a great return of serve is ideal for the slow clay courts. But form and confidence is with Rogers, who should edge this.
