Pironkova back in the day was ranked as high as no.31 in the world. She went on a pregnancy sabbatical in 2018, and returned to the tour after a two year hiatus in late 2020. Pironkova’s first tournament back was the US Open where she had used a protected ranking.
She reached the Quarter-finals of the tournament, losing to Serena Williams in three sets 6-4 3-6 2-6. On the way, she had beaten the eighteenth seed Donna Vekić and tenth seed Garbine Muguruza. Post that she reached the third-round of the French Open as well. In the just concluded Miami Open 2021, Pironkova came through the qualifiers to reach the second round of the tournament, where she was beaten by the seventh seed Aryna Sabalenka. Her opponent in the first round of the Charleston Open is Coco Gauff.
The seventeen year old American is seeded fourteenth for this event. Gauff has done well in two of the last three events she has participated in. First, she reached the Semifinals of the Adelaide International and then the Quarterfinals of the Dubai Open. The last tournament she participated in was the Miami Open where she lost in the very first match to Anastasija Sevastova. Gauff lost in three sets, 6-1 2-6 3-6.

Pironkova is not your typical big groundstroke player. She uses her variations, and mixes it up with drop shots, slices extra. She also has a terrific first serve, which she uses from time to time, and a wonderful backhand.
Gauff is a proper athlete with speed to burn. She has a good serve and a great backhand. This will be a very close match, but in the end the experienced Pironkova will scrape through.
