Jessica Pegula vs Wang Qiang :Preview
Pegula plays her best tennis on hard courts. Post lockdown she has been in decent form as well. She reached the Quarter Finals of the Cincinnati Open, and then followed it up with a third round finish at the US Open.
In the Abu Dhabi Open she was beaten in straight sets by Elina Svitolina, but Pegula took her revenge when she beat Svitolina in the second round of the Australian Open. She eventually reached the Quarter Finals of the event, her best ever finish at the Grand Slam.
Her first round opponent in the main draw of the Qatar Open is Wang Qiang. Wang has not been in the best of forms post lockdown. She has taken the place of Ash Barty in the draw, who withdrew from the event. In 2020 her best match was in the third round of the Australian Open in which she beat Serena Williams. Her plans to set up practice and travel have been hampered due to China’s Covid related lockdown policies which keep changing.
Jessica Pegula vs Wang Qiang: Head-to-Head
These two players have met once on the tour, and it was way back in 2012 at the, Shenzhen Open Qualifiers. Pegula won that match 7-6 7-5.
Jessica Pegula vs Wang Qiang: Prediction
Pegula had to come through the Qualifiers to feature in the main draw at the Qatar Open. I the qualifiers, she beat Gabriela Dabrowski in the first round, Anastasia Potapovain the second round, and Misaki Doiin the third and final round. Pegula is the player in form. She has matches under her belt and is confident. An encounter against off form Wang shouldn’t be too difficult for her to negotiate.
Match Prediction: Jessica Pegula to win in two sets.
