Mertens of Belgium is seeded 10th at this year’s Dubai open. The past few months have been good for her, as she won the Gippsland Trophy and also reached the fourth round of the Australian Open. But since then she has been hampered by a shoulder injury, which forced her out of the Qatar Open.

She is back on court now, and has beaten two players already en route to the third round of the Dubai Open. In the first round she beat Viktoriya Tomova 4-6 6-2 6-4. Her second round opponent was Australian Open Quarter Finalists Shelby Rogers who she beat 6-3 6-3. Her third round opponent is Caroline Garcia.

Garcia who was raked in the top 5 once, has struggled for form and fitness in the last couple of years. She has not had a great start to the season, and might even fall out of the top 50 if things don’t start going her way. In the Dubai Open she has done well so far. In the first round she beat Angelique Kerber 3-6 6-2 6-4, nd in the second she overcame Martina Trevisan 6-2 6-4.

Mertens is a much improved player in the last year or so. Her doubles game seems to be rubbing off on her Singles game too. She is a strong baseline player, who has power to spare.

Garcia is a decent singles player too, who has a good serve and also the shots, but her form has not been any good so far this season. Mertens is expected to take this.
