Ninth seed Garbine Muguruza overcame a stubborn Elise Mertens, who saved seven match points, in the Semis to reach her third Finals of the season. The first Final she reached was at the Yarra Valley Classic where she lost to Ash Barty 7-6,6-4. Her next Final was the Qatar Open where she was defeated by Petra Kvitova 6-2 6-1.

Muguruza will certainly hope it’s third time lucky for her. Muguruza beat Mertens 6-4 7-6. Her opponent in the Final is doubles specialist Barbora Krejcikova.

Krejcikova is not usually known for her singles exploits, and the last Final she played in was in Nuremberg in 2017. Her victory over Jil Teichmann in the Semi Finals was a very special and rare one for her, and she won in straight sets 7-5 6-2.

Muguruza played some outstanding attacking tennis in her Semi Final encounter against Mertens. Some of her returns down the line, her attacking the net, her crosscourt forehands all a reminder of the player she is. Mertens was also a worthy opponent, who facilitated such long, beautiful rallies in the match.

The biggest change in Muguruza’s game is mental. She now has the desire back, she believes. And her aggressive brand of tennis is just an expression of how she is feeling on the inside. Krejcikova in her match simply outhit Teichmann. Powerfully built Krejcikova has lots of power on both her forehand and backhand, and a fast serve to compliment that.

The only time she looked in trouble was when Teichmann mixed her returns, slowed it down. That should act as a clue for Muguruza, who should stay away from going into a hitting contest with Krejcikova, rather mix and match her shots to vary the rhythm of the match. 

Match Prediction: Garbine Muguruza should go past Barbora Krejcikova in three sets.
