The WTA Finals in Riyadh kicks off with World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka facing seventh seed Qinwen Zheng. This is the first official tennis tournament held in Saudi Arabia, following the recently concluded Six Kings Slam.
Sabalenka enters the WTA Finals riding high after recently achieving the World No. 1 ranking. She surpassed Iga Swiatek at the top but still needs to secure her Year-End World No. 1 ranking. Meanwhile, Zheng is one of the most in-form players globally as she competes in her first WTA Finals.

Aryna Sabalenka vs. Qinwen Zheng: Match Preview
In the first half of the season, Aryna Sabalenka was frequently second to Iga Swiatek. However, things changed after Wimbledon. The Belarusian did not participate in the Paris Olympics, allowing her time to prepare for the North American hard court events.
Since July, Sabalenka has hit her stride, winning the Cincinnati Open, US Open, and Wuhan Open consecutively. With Swiatek struggling with some physical issues, Sabalenka overtook her to become the new World No. 1.
On the other hand, Qinwen Zheng was unlikely to qualify for the WTA Finals before the US Open. Although she won Olympic Singles Gold, it didn’t boost her WTA ranking significantly. However, a strong post-US Open run saw her reach the semifinals of the China Open, the final of the Wuhan Open, and win the Japan Open.

Sabalenka has stronger stats on hard courts (38-7 win-loss) compared to Zheng’s (31-10). Notably, Sabalenka has won both hard-court Grand Slam titles this season, making her a favorite to win the WTA Finals in Riyadh.
Zheng suffered lopsided losses to Sabalenka in their first three matches. However, she managed to push the three-time Grand Slam champion to three sets in Wuhan. Given her current form, she could challenge Sabalenka, but the World No. 1 remains the safer bet.
