The pressure is on defending champion Iga Swiatek as she plays her final match of the group stages at the WTA Finals. However, the bigger story is that she is facing a player she likely wouldn’t have expected to meet in Riyadh before the tournament began.
Daria Kasatkina has joined the elite group of WTA players as a replacement for Jessica Pegula. The US Open finalist withdrew before her last match due to a knee injury, which made World No. 9 Kasatkina an automatic entry into the tournament. Unfortunately for her, she won’t be lasting more than one match in Riyadh.

Going into the WTA Finals, there were high expectations for Iga Swiatek, especially after losing the World No. 1 ranking to Aryna Sabalenka. She started her campaign poorly against Barbora Krejcikova but managed to win the match in three sets. However, the cracks in her game became evident during her match against Coco Gauff.
Unfortunately for Swiatek, all hopes of retaining the World No. 1 ranking before the end of 2024 were completely dashed after the loss to Gauff. Although Sabalenka lost her final match against Elena Rybakina, it didn’t matter, as she had already secured the Year-End World No. 1 ranking.
Meanwhile, Daria Kasatkina was last seen on court at the Japan Open, where she lost in the quarterfinals to Sofia Kenin. Before that, she had defeated teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva in the Ningbo Open final, where Andreeva struggled to control her emotions during the trophy ceremony, and Kasatkina came up to console her.

Believe it or not, Iga Swiatek and Daria Kasatkina have not played each other in two years. The last time they met was at the WTA Finals in Fort Worth, where Swiatek won the match in straight sets.
Kasatkina’s only win over Swiatek came at the 2021 Eastbourne International, where she triumphed in three sets. This was also their first head-to-head meeting, after which Swiatek won the next five encounters.
A lot has happened in both of their careers since then. However, Swiatek will have the edge in this match, as she thrives in these big moments and will not let her WTA Finals title defense slip away easily.
