Iga Swiatek was back on the court at the WTA Finals on Sunday (November 3). It was her first tournament since August at the US Open. The Pole opened her account at the event with a comeback victory against Barbora Krejcikova.
The World No. 2 will now face a tough test against Coco Gauff in the second round-robin action in the Orange Group. Gauff, meanwhile, defeated compatriot Jessica Pegula in her opening match in Riyadh.

Iga Swiatek captured her fifth career Grand Slam at the French Open in June but failed to make an impact on other Major events. She won the Abu Dhabi title in February and followed it up by triumphing at Indian Wells.
During the clay season, she showed class by winning the Madrid Open and Italian Open, while losing just once in four tournaments. However, she struggled during the North American hard court swing, failing to reach any final.
Swiatek then parted ways with long-term coach Tomasz Wiktorowski and partnered with Naomi Osaka’s ex-coach Wim Fissette. In the WTA Finals opening match, she needed to come from behind to beat Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
On the other hand, Coco Gauff enjoyed a good start to the season, winning the Auckland Open and reaching the Australian Open semifinals. After that, she suffered a title drought, which got worse during the North American swing, where she failed to defend two titles.
In the Asian swing, Gauff found her game rhythm. The 20-year-old defeated Karolina Muchova to win the China Open. She then rode the momentum at the Wuhan Open, where she got to the semifinals before losing to Aryna Sabalenka in three sets. In her opening match at the WTA Finals, she earned a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 victory over Jessica Pegula.

Iga Swiatek didn’t look sharp in the first set against Krejcikova but did put on a good display in the end. She will hope to play with more precision against Coco Gauff, whom she has dominated in their meetings. The duo have met each other 12 times, with Swiatek winning eleven of them.
The last time Gauff defeated Swiatek was at the Cincinnati Open last year. Meanwhile, the Polish star defeated the American at the Italian Open and French Open, both in straight sets, this year. Gauff has always looked out of sorts anytime she faces Swiatek in recent matches.
The American will need to be more clinical to overcome the former World No. 1. However, Swiatek will hope to exploit Gauff’s constant errors in tough matches while limiting her chances on the court. It promises to be a tight and entertaining match.
