Coco Gauff is all set to lock horns with Aryna Sabalenka in a blockbuster semifinal at the WTA Finals. On Thursday (November 7), Gauff failed to overcome Barbora Krejcikova in her third group-stage match, and as a result, she set up the clash with the Belarusian.

Sabalanka became the first player to secure a semifinal berth. Qinwen Zheng from her group soon followed suit. Although Gauff had already reached the semifinals, all eyes were on her match against Krejcikova. Had the American defeated the reigning Wimbledon champion, Iga Swiatek would have progressed to the last four.

Aryna Sabalenka has been enjoying a great hard-court season. After reaching the semifinals of the Citi Open and the quarterfinals at the Canadian Open, she won the Cincinnati Masters before taking home her first US Open title, beating Jessica Pegula in both tournaments.

The 26-year-old then won the Wuhan Open before securing the semifinal berth at the WTA Finals. En route to the semifinals, she defeated the likes of Qinwen Zheng and Jasmine Paolini but lost to Elena Rybakina. Last year at the WTA Finals, she fell to Iga Swiatek in the semifinals. In 2022 however, she reached the summit clash and was defeated by Caroline Garcia.

Coco Gauff on the other hand, did not have decent campaigns on the North American hardcourt swing. But she finally ended her long trophyless run with a victory at the China Open. At the year-end event, she went past Jessica Pegula (who later withdrew from the tournament) and Swiatek. Against Swiatek, she also registered her second win in their 13 meetings.

Aryna Sabalenka vs. Coco Gauff: Match Prediction

It’s difficult to predict who between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka would reach the final. They have met eight times on the WTA Tour with both winning four matches each.

But it was Sabalenka who won their last two encounters. They met twice this year, in the semifinals of the Australian Open and the semifinals of the Wuhan Open, which Sabalenka won before clinching both the trophies. Given that Sabalenka is in red-hot form, she may end up winning the clash and book another final spot.
