The four-time Grand Slam champion then failed to end the French Open final in her favor with a three-set defeat to Coco Gauff. She then suffered defeat at the hands of eventual runner-up Amanda Anisimova in the Wimbledon semifinal, before ending her Grand Slam title drought at the US Open, defending her title against Anisimova.

The Belarusian has clinched four titles this year: the Brisbane International, Miami Open, Madrid Open, and the US Open. Before arriving in Wuhan, the 27-year-old failed to defend her title at the Wuhan Open due to her defeat to eventual runner-up Jessica Pegula. She also lost two more finals, to Mirra Andreeva at Indian Wells and to Jelena Ostapenko at the Stuttgart Open.

Pegula is chasing her fourth title of the season in Riyadh. She has featured in six finals so far this year, winning the ATX Open, Charleston Open, and the Bad Homburg Open by defeating McCartney Kessler, Sofia Kenin, and Iga Swiątek, respectively. The three finals that she lost were at the hands of Keys, Sabalenka, and Gauff at the Adelaide International, Miami Open, and the Wuhan Open, respectively.
