The 54th edition of the WTA Finals is currently underway in Riyadh. Coco Gauff is playing as the defending champion.

The two-time Grand Slam singles champion defeated 2024 Paris Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng (couldn’t qualify) last year. But the American ace lost her first round robin match against compatriot Jessica Pegula.

Now she will be up against Jasmine Paolini in her second match. The Italian ace, before scheduling the match against the 22-year-old, suffered a straight-set defeat at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka.

Gauff, Paolini, Sabalenka, and Pegula are from Group Steffi Graf, while Group Serena Williams has six-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek, Amanda Anisimova, Elena Rybakina, and Madison Keys. From each group, the top two players will reach the semifinals. The top two players of one group will meet the top two players of the other group in the last four.

Coco Gauff vs. Jasmine Paolini: Match Preview

Coco Gauff is bidding to win her third title of the season. After a sluggish start to the season, Gauff made it to the final for the first time when the clay swing started. On clay, Gauff featured in three finals, including the French Open.

She lost the Madrid Open and the Italian Open titles to Aryna Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini, respectively. But at Roland Garros, she took her revenge on the four-time Grand Slam singles champion, beating her in three sets in the championship clash.

Following the clay swing, Gauff failed to clinch a set in the two tournaments she played on the grass swing, at the Berlin Open and Wimbledon. On the North American hardcourt swing, it was no different as she failed to reach a single semifinal.

On the Asian swing, after failing to defend her title at the China Open with a straight-set defeat to eventual champion Amanda Anisimova, Gauff ended her trophy drought by beating Pegula in the Wuhan Open final.

Paolini, on the other hand, is chasing her second title of the year. Earlier this season, she was struggling to make deep runs and made the singles final for the first time this season at the Italian Open, where she defeated Gauff. The next final she reached was at the Cincinnati Open, where Swiatek denied her the title.

Before arriving in Riyadh, Paolini played the Ningbo Open and lost the semifinal to eventual winner Elena Rybakina. Paolini also played doubles at the WTA Finals alongside compatriot Sara Errani. They defeated the pair of Asia Muhammad and Demi Schuurs, but lost to the pair of Jelena Ostapenko and Hsieh Su-wei.

Coco Gauff vs. Jasmine Paolini: Match Prediction

Gauff has made her fourth consecutive appearance in the year-end championships. She made her debut in 2022 and failed to reach the round robin stage. The following season, the defending champion’s campaign ended in the semifinals.

Paolini, on the other hand, qualified for the WTA Finals for the first time last year, thanks to her two Grand Slam final appearances and her win at the WTA 1000 Dubai Open. Gauff has met Paolini six times and holds a 3-3 head-to-head record. In their last encounter, Gauff won the match in the semifinals of the Wuhan Open.

Match prediction: Coco Gauff to win in three sets.
