The 54th edition of the WTA Finals will kick off on November 1. Coco Gauff will enter the tournament as the defending champion.

Last year, the American clinched her career’s first WTA Finals trophy by defeating 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist Qinwen Zheng. The Chinese ace failed to qualify this year. Gauff, in her first round-robin match, will lock horns with compatriot Jessica Pegula.

Gauff and Pegula are part of Group Steffi Graf. Both of them will also lock horns with Aryna Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini. The players in Group Serena Williams are: Iga Swiatek, Amanda Anisimova, Elena Rybakina, and Madison Keys.

Coco Gauff vs. Jessica Pegula: Match Preview

Coco Gauff will be chasing her third title of the season in Riyadh. Following a sluggish start earlier this season, Gauff ended up playing three back-to-back finals when the European clay swing started.

She reached the finals of the Madrid Open and the Italian Open but failed to go past World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini, respectively. But at the French Open, where Gauff last year clinched the doubles title and was the runner-up in singles in 2022, Gauff took her revenge on the Belarusian with a three-set win in the final.

But she failed to win a set in the two tournaments she played on the grass swing (Berlin Open and Wimbledon), losing in her opening-round matches. Her trophyless runs continued in the next few events. It was at the Wuhan Open that Gauff ended her title drought by defeating Jessica Pegula.

For Pegula, the Wuhan match against Gauff was her third defeat in finals this season. Earlier this season, the 2024 US Open finalist suffered defeat at the hands of compatriot Madison Keys in the Brisbane International final, following which, she was successful in clinching the ATX Open by defeating McCartney Kessler.

Pegula lost to Sabalenka in the Miami Open final and won the Charleston Open and the Bad Homburg Open by defeating Sofia Kenin and Swiatek, respectively, before she lost to Gauff in Wuhan. In short, Pegula is 3-3 in finals this year.

Coco Gauff vs. Jessica Pegula: Match Prediction

Last year in the WTA Finals, while Gauff won the title, Pegula failed to progress to the semifinals. She lost her first two group matches to Gauff and Barbora Krejcikova, but ended up withdrawing from the tournament ahead of her clash with Swiatek because of a knee injury.

So far in her career, Pegula has won just three Big Titles (three WTA 1000s at the 2023 and 2024 Canadian Open and the 2022 Guadalajara Open). She came as an alternate at the 2021 WTA Finals and, the following season, could not progress to the last four.

The 22-year-old, on the other hand, made her WTA Finals debut in 2022 and reached the semifinals the following year, before lifting it in 2024 by beating Qinwen Zheng. Gauff is the winner of six Big Titles.

Both players are enjoying good form. But Gauff will have a slight edge, even though she trails 3-4 in the head-to-head matchups. The two-time Grand Slam champion defeated Pegula in their last two matches, in last year’s WTA Finals round robin stage and the Wuhan Open.

Match prediction: Coco Gauff to win in three sets.
