The end of the WTA season is around the corner. The year-end championships are underway in Riyadh, and players who booked a spot in the semifinals are Aryna Sabalenka, Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula, and Amanda Anisimova.

Unfortunately for Coco Gauff, a defeat at the hands of Sabalenka in the round robin match means her progression is cut short. She was one of the two players in the draw who tasted success in the WTA Finals, with the other player being Iga Swiatek, the winner of the 2023 WTA Finals.

Jessica Pegula vs. Elena Rybakina: Match Preview

Jessica Pegula this season has won three titles and reached three more finals. She kick-started her campaign at the Adelaide International, where her campaign ended with a three-set defeat to compatriot Madison Keys in the final.

Pegula next clinched the ATX Open against McCartney Kessler before she suffered defeat in the Miami Open final at the hands of Aryna Sabalenka. She next beat Sofia Kenin in the Charleston Open final and denied Iga Swiatek her first grass-court title at the Bad Homburg Open. The last time she reached a final was at the Wuhan Open, where Coco Gauff defeated her.

Elena Rybakina has featured in just two finals this year. She had a sluggish start to the season and ended her title drought only when the Strasbourg Open started. The 2022 Wimbledon champion beat Liudmila Samsonova in Strasbourg.

Amidst the pressure of WTA Finals qualification, Rybakina clinched the Ningbo Open and needed just two more wins to book a ticket for Riyadh. Those two wins the Kazakh ace clinched at the Pan Pacific Open against Leylah Fernandez and Victoria Mboko.

Following her win, the 26-year-old withdrew from her quarterfinal match against Linda Noskova, citing fitness problems, but this did not go down well with the tennis world, who accused her of playing the event in Tokyo solely for the purpose of WTA Finals qualification.

Jessica Pegula vs. Elena Rybakina: Match Prediction

Rybakina is the only player from Group Serena Williams who did not lose a single round robin match. En route to scheduling the match against Pegula, she defeated Anisimova, Swiatek, and Ekaterina Alexandrova (replaced Keys).

Pegula kick-started her campaign by defeating Gauff before she lost her second match to Sabalenka. The 31-year-old then breezed past two-time Grand Slam finalist Jasmine Paolini.

Pegula will be playing in the semifinals of the WTA Finals for the second time after the 2023 season. She was an alternate in 2021 and qualified for the event the following year. Last year, her campaign ended in the round robin stage.

Rybakina has progressed to the WTA Finals’ penultimate stage for the first time in her career. She made her debut in 2023 and also booked a spot among the top eight players last year.

Pegula has played Rybakina four times, of which the Kazakh ace clinched just one match. The last time they faced each other was in the round robin stage of the 2023 WTA Finals. Rybakina is in red-hot form and will have a slight edge despite the head-to-head record when she enters the match against the 2024 US Open finalist.

Match prediction: Elena Rybakina to win in three sets.
