Belinda Bencic has been on a losing spree since she made it to the Finals of the Adelaide International. Her results were mighty poor, but she had continued to persevere. Finally, a change of surface and with some luck she did really well at the Madrid Open. In the Madrid Open she beat players like Ons Jabeur in straight sets to reach the Quarter-finals of the tournament. At the Quarters she was beaten by Paula Badosa.

Her first round opponent here is the doubles specialist from France Kristina Mladenovic. Mladenovic has qualified for the main draw of the tournament after going through two gruesome rounds of qualifiers. In the first qualifier she beat Leonie Kung of Switzerland and in the second qualifier she got the better of Russian veteran Vera Zvonareva.

In the Madrid Open. Bencic showed signs of coming back to form. Like in Madrid she will again open against Mladenovic and that would be Bencic’s preferred choice as well. Mladenovic has not done well in singles at all, and beyond qualifying for main draws, it’s difficult to see her winning matches in the main draw. This should be an easy win for Bencic.
