Garbine Muguruza has been one of the most consistent players this year, but that was until the clay court leg came around. Her start at Charleston was cut short due to injury which was attributed to a sudden change from hard court to clay court and not enough time in between.

She is in Rome now, playing only her second clay court tournament of the year. This former French Open Champion has nothing to prove about her clay court credentials. In the first round, she spanked Patricia Maria Țig of Romania 6-1 6-2. Her second round opponent is twenty-six year old American Bernarda Pera.

Pera has been working hard on her game. This is the second consecutive WTA 1000 event, after Madrid,  that she has got into the main draw of. In the first round she beat Copa Colsanitas runner up Tamara Zidanšek 6-3 6-2.

Muguruza withdrew from the tournament at Charleston, when she left a sharp pain on her left leg. She then went on to withdraw from Madrid, and the reason given was injury to the left thigh. In Rome she was clinical against Tig in the first round, but her injury is not in the clear yet.

Pera has come through qualifiers, and has a lot of work under her belt already, and will be willing to go from the start. A fully fit Muguruza should win this easily, but her fitness remains an underlying concern.
