Ekaterina Alexandrova has been out-of-form ever since the pandemic break ended. The Russian has struggled to string together back-to-back wins in tournaments.
Alexandrova reached her career-best world ranking of 25 in February this year but has slipped down to 33 since then. She also won her first career WTA title in Shenzhen this year, defeating the likes of Garbine Muguruza and Elena Rybakina. She also made the semifinals at St. Petersburg but lost in three sets to Kiki Bertens. Her most recent tournament was the Ostrava Open, where she lost in the first round to a talented Anett Kontaveit despite taking the first set.
Her opponent is Czech Katerina Siniakova. She has had a little better form than the Russian since the restart. However, she prefers playing on clay over other surfaces, and her record reflects the same – only one win from seven indoor matches across the past two seasons.
Siniakova has plenty of experience playing doubles, which is where she earned her only title of 2020 (at Shenzhen). The world no. 64 fared well on the clay-court swing, securing a quarterfinals spot at Strasbourg and a third-round at Roland Garros. She also made it to the second round in Rome, upsetting Angelique Kerber in the first round. The Czech’s most recent tournament was also the Ostrava Open, where she lost to defending champion Coco Gauff in the first round.

Alexandrova and Siniakova have met six times previously on tour, splitting the head-to-head 3-3. Their two most recent meetings came earlier this year, at Shenzhen and Strasbourg. In Shenzhen, Alexandrova won easily 6-4, 6-4; the clay courts at Strasbourg gave Siniakova the edge in a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
This will be the seventh time the two players meet.

Siniakova’s poor form on hard courts, especially indoors, will give Alexandrova an edge to win.
While both have had shaky seasons, Alexandrova’s prowess on the hard courts should help her pull through. However, this will not be a straightforward victory for the Russian, as she is also suffering from poor overall form.
Match Prediction: Ekaterina Alexandrova to win in three sets against Katerina Siniakova.
