Sorona Cirstea vs Julia Grabher: Match Preview

Sorona Cirstea

Romanian Sorona Cirstea is having a disappointing 2020 season. The former world no. 21 has suffered early exits in multiple tournaments this year, leading to her slipping down to world no. 87.

Cirstea hasn’t won any titles and brings a 9-9 win-loss record coming into this tournament. Her best performance came at the US Open, where she defeated higher-ranked opponents like Johanna Konta and Christina McHale to reach the third round. She also reached the second round in Melbourne but failed to make a mark at Roland Garros. Her deepest run in recent times came way back in 2019, where she reached the finals of the Tashkent Open. However, all her victories there were against lower-ranked opposition and she lost to a higher-ranked Alison van Uytvanck in the finals.

She has only played in one indoor hardcourt tournament in 2020 – the Ostrava Open, where she lost in the first round of qualifying. Thus, her indoor hardcourt record in this season is 0-1.

Her opponent in this match will be Julia Grabher. The Austrian isn’t very experienced on the WTA Tour as she still competes mainly on the ITF circuit.

The world no. 225 hasn’t seen much success on the ITF events too this year. She made it to the quarterfinals at two ITF events in Italy – Grado and Tarvisio. She also reached the quarterfinals of ITF Trnava 2 earlier in the year. In WTA events, she has struggled to reach the main draw on most occasions. In fact, she has only participated in 3 WTA events this year – 2 Grand Slams and the Prague Open. She failed to make it past qualifying in both the Australian and French Opens but got a main draw entry at Prague. There, she lost to a slightly higher-ranked opponent in the first round.

Grabher has a decent 5-5 record on indoor hard courts this season.

Sorona Cirstea vs Julia Grabher: Match Prediction

Sorona Cirstea will be looking to win this match comfortably

Despite having more match practice on indoor hardcourts, Julia Grabher will find it hard competing against a much higher-ranked opponent. Thus, Sorona Cirstea will be the favorite to win this match.

The 30-year-old Romanian will look to salvage an otherwise dreary season with a good performance at Linz, which would start with a win here.

Match Prediction: Sorona Cirstea to win in straight sets against Julia Grabher.
