World no. 87 Sorona Cirstea is coming to Linz after a disappointing season, holding a 9-9 win-loss record in 2020.
The Romanian hasn’t won any titles in recent times; her best run in this year came at the US Open. She created upsets over Johanna Konta and Christina McHale – two higher-ranked opponents – to reach the third round. However, she is yet to impress in other tournaments, exiting within the first two rounds in many of them.
Cirstea won her first-round match against German Julia Grabher after she retired midway during the first set of the match.
Her opponent will be Oceane Dodin. The world no. 115 is a qualifier at Linz, earning two victories in qualifying.
The Frenchwoman, who reached her career-best ranking of 46 in 2017, hasn’t been playing too well since then. In the past year, she has a commendable 25-12 record. However, this is by virtue of her also competing on the ITF circuit. She won two ITF titles in 2020, including her most recent tournament. In WTA events, she produced mixed results, exiting early in many but also reaching the quarters in two of them. Her best highlight was defeating Johanna Konta on the way to the St. Petersburg quarters. She even managed to take top seed Elena Rybakina to three sets but eventually lost.
The top seed in qualifying, Dodin comfortably won both qualifying matches to make the main draw. In her first-round match, she produced some brilliant tennis to upset seventh seed Jil Teichmann in three sets.

The two players have met once before on the WTA Tour. Their only previous meeting was incidentally also in the Round of 16 at Linz in 2016. In that match, the younger, more in-form Oceane Dodin defeated Cirstea by a score of 6-2, 6-4.

Recent form points towards a victory for Oceane Dodin. She has won titles in the ITF Circuit recently and has much more practice indoors than her Romanian opponent. However, her performance on WTA events hasn’t been convincing after the pandemic break, so her form may be shaky on-court.
Cirstea has been having troubles with her game for quite some time now, struggling to string together more than 2 wins in a row. She will find a tough challenge if she wants to defeat the lower-ranked but in-form Dodin.
