The fifth seed at Linz, Veronika Kudermetova doesn’t have any titles this year. The world no. 46‘s form after the pandemic break has been varied at best. While she exited in the first rounds at Flushing Meadows, Prague and Rome, she made some good runs in other tournaments. She reached the third round at the Western & Southern Open, and the second round at Roland Garros. Her most recent tournament was also her best performance after the break. In the Ostrava Open, she forged a brilliant path to the quarterfinals from qualifying.

The Russian upset higher-ranked opponents like Donna Vekic and second seed Karolina Pliskova to reach the quarters. There, she managed to take Jennifer Brady to three sets but lost steam in the decider to lose the match. At Linz, she double-bageled Barbara Haas in just 52 minutes to win her first-round match.

Her opponent is Arantxa Rus. The Dutchwoman hasn’t been able to get past the second round on many occasions after the break. Her best performance this year came way back in March at Monterrey, where she reached the semifinals.

The world no. 72 reached the second rounds at the Cincinnati Masters and at Rome. She even managed to take a set off Serena Williams in Cincinnati but lost in the deciding tiebreak. At Linz, she won her first-round match against Tamara Zidansek in straight sets.
