Clara Burel vs Fiona Ferro Preview
After a slow start, Fiona Ferro has looked every bit like the best player remaining in the tournament. Her vicious forehand was in full display against Martincova and she will be happy with her game on the indoor hard courts heading into this match.
Ferro is into the quarter-final on home soil in Lyon, after a comparatively easy outing against the Czech qualifier Tereza Martincova. She had taken the first set and had just broken her opponent for the third time, when Martincova was forced to retire with a back problem.
Not that Ferro would have been complaining about that, having been pushed all the way in the first round by another qualifier, the Pole Magdalena Frech.
However, although she has not played particularly well this week, the tournament is opening up for her. With the elimination of the top seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, she is now the highest ranked player left in the competition and can begin to dream of winning her third WTA title, and her first since Palermo last year.
Clara Burel will be equally confident. After a wrist injury derailed her attempts to break onto the main tour in 2019, the French starlet has looked impressive so far this week. She clearly has the game to be a mainstay on the WTA Tour in the future. Her match against Ferro is a good test of just how ready her game is.
Burel is a former junior world number one who got to the third round of the French Open last October, and qualified for the Australian Open for the second time, although this time she did not get past the first round stage.
She was given a wildcard for this event and was drawn against another Frenchwoman, Alize Cornet, the number five seed in the first round. That turned out to be a battle but Burel in the end out-lasted her more experienced opponent and clinched victory in the third set.
That resulted in a second round match with Aliaksandra Sasnovich, and it became a war of attrition in the first two sets, Burel winning the first and Sasnovich the second.
However, Burel ran away with the third, and Sasnovich’s game deserted her and the teenager took the set to love, to earn her quarter-final place.

Clara Burel vs Fiona Ferro Match Prediction
Given how well she has played this week, Burel is expected to put up a good fight. However, Ferro has been one of the best players on the tour over the last six months. She has displayed her immense prowess on clay and will now be keen to show she can do it on hard courts as well. I expect her to have to battle for this, but she should make the semifinals when all is said and done.
Match Prediction: Fiona Ferro wins in straight sets
