Sabalenka has been the form player this season, with three WTA titles and a 15 match unbeaten run earlier this year. She is coming off a Final appearance at the Stuttgart Open, a great performance considering the event was on clay. In the Final she lost to Ash Barty in three sets, 6-3 0-6 3-6.

In the first round of this event she swept past veteran Russian player Vera Zvonareva, registering a crushing 6-1, 6-2 victory. Her opponent in the second round is Daria Kasatkina.

Kasatkina has done well on hard courts this season, and she has two trophies to show for it as well. She won the Phillip Island Trophy in February and followed it up with the St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy in March. In the first round match here, she beat Irina-Camelia Begu in three sets, 4-6 6-4 7-6.
