Barty is on a mission at the moment. The mission is to win as many titles as she can and create as big a gap between the World no.1 and World no.2 positions as possible. Barty came into the Madrid Open having won two of the three tournaments she has participated in since the Australian Open 2021.

She won the Miami Open, the Stuttgart Open and reached the Quarterfinals Final Of the Charleston Open in between. At the Madrid Open, she beat Laura Siegemund in the first round, and had a close shave against Tamara Zidanšek in the second round. In the third, she beat the defending French Open Champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets 7-5 6-4. Her Quarter-final opponent is Petra Kvitova.

Kvitova has had a stop start year so far. She won the Qatar Open but then lost her first match in the Dubai Open. On clay so far, her best performance has been a Quarterfinal appearance at the Stuttgart Open. In this tournament so far, she has beaten Marie Bouzková in the first round and got the better of Angelique Kerber in the second. In the third she defeated the in-form Veronika Kudermetova in three sets, 6-4 4-6 6-4.

World no.1 Barty is a different kind of a beast on clay, with the defeat of Swiatek in the last round, Barty won her fourteenth consecutive match on clay, a run going back to her 2019 triumph. Barty is in red hot form at the moment and will be very difficult to stop. Kvitova is playing decently, but she is not on top of her game. Her lapses have ensured that she has had to play an extra round in the last round which is not a good thing. Everything points towards an exciting match with Barty winning in the end.
