Day 9 of the WTA Madrid Open saw some thrilling matches with the semi-final matches lining up. World No.1 Ash Barty wins again while eighth seed Belinda Bencic faced a tough loss.

Barty survives Kvitova challenge

It was a cracker of a match on center court with the two grand slam champions, Ash Barty and Petra Kvitova meeting for the 10th time. The World No.1 defeated the Czech in three sets 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in one hour and 48 minutes to reach her first Mutua Madrid Open semifinal.

The Australian has extended her winning streaks on red dirt to 15, and against Top 20 opponents to 10. Her season record is 24-3, and she has won five of her past six meetings with Kvitova

Badosa’s dream run at home continues

The fairytale run of Paula Badosa at home got even better. She became the first Spanish woman to reach the last four in Madrid with a 6-4, 7-5 upset of No.8 seed Belinda Bencic.

The current World No.62 made her third semifinal of the season, fifth overall and first at 1000 level with a repeat of her Charleston result against Bencic. 

Pavlyuchenkova knocks Muchova out

Russian 29-year old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is having a tremendous out in Madrid. He had already defeated big names in Karolina Pliskova and Jennifer Brady. And in the last 8, she got the better of Karolina Muchova in two tiebreak sets, 7-6(4), 7-6(2) to post a career-best result at the Madrid Open.

Sabalenka eases past injured Mertens

Birthday girl and fifth seed Aryna Sabalenka was looking good all week and continued her dominance against Elise Mertens, who shocked Simona Halep in the previous round.

It wasn’t ideal for the Belarussian as her friend and doubles partner Elise Mertens withdrew from their quarterfinal due to a left thigh injury while trailing 6-1, 4-0.
