Since reaching the Finals of the Australian Open, Jennifer Brady has participated in three tournaments, not considering Madrid, and has lost her first match in all the three tournaments. In Qatar she lost to Anett Kontaveit, in Miami to Sara Sorribes Tormo, and in the Stuttgart Open to Petra Kvitova.

At the Madrid Open though she seems to have turned it around. In the first round she sent fellow American Venus Williams packing. In the second round she dropped a mere three games before dispatching Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Her third round opponent is Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Pavlyuchenkova is a competent player on clay but her form has been terrible this season. She has rarely made it past the opening rounds of the tournaments she has participated in. In her first round here, she beat Madison Keys of the USA. In the second round she overcame Karolina Pliskova in two sets. Pavlyuchenkova won, 6-0 7-5,  in one hour sixteen minutes.
