Petra Kvitova is slowly but surely going up a gear in every round and getting ready to win back the trophy she had last won in 2018. After dispatching Marie Bouzková in the first round, she was up against an old foe Angelique Kerber of Germany in the second. Kvitova served well and maintained a high level of intensity throughout the match, in the end winning in straight sets 6-4 7-5. Her third round opponent is Veronika Kudermetova.

Kudermetova is going through a purple patch right now. She won the Charleston Open last month and then followed it up by reaching the Semi-final of the Istanbul Cup. In the first round here, she beat Russian Elena Vesnina in straight sets. In the second, Kudermetova came through a straight-set win against Kiki Bertens. Kudermetova won 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 21 minutes to extend her excellent run on clay which has seen the Russian win 11 of her last 12 matches on this surface this season.
