Kudermetova has hit a purple patch in her tennis career. The twenty-four year old Russian has a record of 21-9 in 2021 which includes a title win and a semi-final appearance on clay. She won the Charleston Open in the beginning of this month and followed it up with a Semi-final appearance at the Istanbul Cup.

In the Charleston Final she got the better of Danka Kovinic 6-4 6-2, and at Istanbul she was ousted in the Semis by Elise Mertens. In the first round here, she beat Elina Vesnina in straight sets 6-1 6-4. Her second round opponent is defending Champion Kiki Bertens.

Bertens won the trophy back in 2019, and was the runners up to Petra Kvitova in 2018. Bertens has played only three WTA events thus far this season, as she continues a comeback from Achilles tendon surgery. She had previously suffered first round losses in all the three matches she had played. In the first round here, she defeated 15-year-old WTA main-draw debutante Victoria Jiménez Kasintseva of Andorra, 6-4, 6-0.

Kudermetova is in great form and will be a heavy favourite to win this match against Bertens. Bertens on the other hand is just returning to top flight tennis and will be an underdog. The last time Bertens won a few matches in a row was in the French Open last year where she reached the round of sixteen, more than six months ago. This will be a very tough test for Mertens.
