Azarenka has played in only three tournaments this year. First was the Australian Open where she had lost in the first round. Post the first round debacle there, she took to the court at the Qatar Open. In Qatar she played some fantastic tennis to book her place in the Semi-finals, but a back injury forced her to withdraw from the tournament. Azarenka played her third tournament at Miami, where she lost in the round of sixteen to Ash Barty. In the first round she overcame the tenacious Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets. She won 7-5 3-6 6-1.

Her second round opponent is Jessica Pegula. Pegula has had her breakthrough year in 2021. First she reached the Quarter-finals of the Australian Open, then followed it up with a Semi-final finish in Qatar and a Quarter-final finish in Dubai. The Madrid Masters is her first clay court event this year, and she has made a great start to the event by beating the Istanbul Cup Champion, Sorana Cirstea, in straight sets, 7-6 6-3.

A former semi-finalist at the French Open, Azarenka definitely has the game to beat anybody on clay. But the injuries are beginning to affect her game and becoming a real problem. Pegula has to improve her defensive game if she wants to do well on clay regularly.

Match Prediction: Victoria Azarenka will get the better of Jessica Pegula in three sets.
