Sabalenka is seeded seventh at this year’s Miami open. Post pandemic Sabalenka has won a few WTA titles like, the WTA 500 events in Ostrava and Abu Dhabi, and also the WTA 250 event in Linz. But she has failed to go past the fourth round in any of the Grand Slams this season.

Her last appearance on court was against Gabriel Muguruza in the Quarterfinals of the Dubai Open, a match that she lost in three sets, 6-3 3-6 2-6. Sabalenka had a bye in the first set. Her opponent in the second round is Tsvetana Pironkova. Pironkova has returned to tennis in 2020 after a two year hiatus.

She was once ranked as high as no.31 in the World. Her best result post returning to the tour has been a Quarterfinal appearance at the US Open 2020. She was beaten there by Serena Williams in three sets, 6-4 3-6 2-6. At the Miami Open 2021, she has qualified into the main draw. Her first round opponent was Marta Kostyuk from Ukraine whom she beat in three sets 7-6 3-6 6-3.
