Ashleigh Barty received a bye in the first round by virtue of being the top seed. In the second round, she defeated Kristina Kucova in a tough three set battle. The top seed defeated French Open 2017 champion, Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets in the third round. She had to toil hard to grind out a three set victory against the two time Grandslam champion and the 14th seed, Victoria Azarenka.
Aryna Sabalenka also received a bye in the first round. She defeated Tvsetana Pironkova in the second round in three sets. She had to make a comeback from a set down as she clinched the match in the last set tiebreaker. The seventh seed brushed aside Veronika Kudermetova in straight sets in the third round. She was even more impressive in the fourth round as she defeated Marketa Vondrousova in straight sets, dropping just three games.
