The Australian Open Doubles Champion, Elise Mertens, is seeded sixteenth ,in Singles, for this tournament. Her game over the last few months has improved in leaps and bounds in singles. She reached the fourth round of the Australian Open, and post that she made the semifinals of the Dubai Open. At Dubai she was beaten by Garbine Muguruza 6-4 7-6 in the Semis.

At the Miami Open so far she had a first round bye, and in the second round she beat Katie Boulter of Britain 6-4 6-1. Her opponent in the third round is Anett Kontaveit of Estonia. The twenty second seed Kontaveit is a much improved player in the last couple of seasons.

She reached the Quarterfinals of the Qatar Open and the round of sixteen in the Dubai Open. In the first round match at Miami she had a bye, and in the second she beat Sorana Cîrstea in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Mertens is a powerful striker of the tennis ball, who can be good at the net as well. But her game is composed of mostly hanging around the baseline and hitting powerful groundstrokes, and down the line winners from there.

Kontaveit is a much improved player in the last couple of seasons, specially her serve which has improved enormously. This will be a tight match and can go either way, but Mertens is in better form and should edge it.
