The Miami Open 2021 was a test for Barty. She had failed to go past the Quarter-Finals in the Australian Open 2021, her home Open. Then, she crashed out in the first round of the Adelaide International. These series of events had led to her detractors calling Naomi Osaka the ‘real no.1’. But Champions respond on the field, and in Barty’s case on the court, and she did. In the first round of the tournament she had a bye, in the second she beat Kristína Kučová in three sets.

A little bit of a rocky start. But her straight set victory over Jeļena Ostapenko in the third round, put her fans at ease. In the fourth round she overcame Victoria Azarenka in what could have been a very tricky match for Barty, she won 6-1 1-6 6-2. In the Quarter-Final she had a tough fight against Aryna Sabalenka but in the end ran out winner in three sets 6-4 6-7 6-3.

The Semi-Final saw her overcome Elina Svitolina with relative ease in straight sets 6-3 6-3. Her Opponent in the Finals is Bianca Andreescu. Andreescu came back on tour this year after an eighteen month injury layoff. She has shown exemplary courage and determination so far in the tournament.

In the Miami Open 2021, she had a bye in the first round of the tournament. In the second she beat Tereza Martincová. The third round saw her overcome Amanda Anisimova. Her real test came against Garbine Muguruza in the fourth round. A hard-fought match where Andreescu fought back from a set down to win in three sets, 3-6 6-3 6-2.

In the Quarter-Finals she Sara Sorribes Tormo, another three set match ensued and in the end Andreescu won 6-4 3-6 6-3. The Semi-Final clash against Maria Sakkari went the distance too. A three set match that Andreescu won 7-6 3-6 7-6.

Barty is the defending champion at this year’s Miami Open 2021 and she has played in that same vein as well. But, she will be worried about her serve, which has let her down at times.

Andreescu has been impressive too. The marathon that she won against Sakkari testament to her grit and fighting spirit. This contest can go either way, but the more experienced Barty holds a slight edge over the twenty year old Andreescu.
