Podoroska made history last year when she became the first qualifier to reach the Semi Finals of the French Open, losing to the eventual champion Iga Świątek. After that, she reached the Quarterfinals of both the Linz Open and the Melbourne Warm up tournament. But since then her form has been erratic.
She was ousted in the second round of the Australian Open 2021, and since then has been out of every event in the first or second round itself. The last tournament she participated in was the Monterrey Open where she was sent home in the very first round itself, a 4-6 4-6 defeat to Anna Kalinskaya.
Her first round opponent here is Egyptian Mayar Sherif. Sherif became the first Egyptian woman to win a match at the Grand Slams when she beat Frenchwoman Chloé Paquet in the 2021 Australian Open.
