Halep has participated in a handful of tournaments in the past season. She won the Prague Open and the Italian open, and was ousted in the fourth round at the French Open, falling to new star on the block Iga Świątek. She skipped the North American leg of the tour due to Covid related worries.

In the Australian Open Quarter Final she lost to old nemesis Serena Williams. Now vaccinated against Covid, Halep is back on the American soil in search of another ATP Trophy. Halep had a bye in the first round, Her second round opponent is Caroline Garcia of France.
