Kenin is returning to court after taking a few weeks off to recover from her Appendix surgery that she had in Australia. Kenin just won the WTA’s Player of the year for 2020, which goes to show her consistency before and after the pandemic in 2020. Last year she had won the Australian Open, the Lyon Open and also was a finalist at the French Open.

The American got a first round bye. Her first round opponent is German Andrea Petkovic. Petkovic was ranked as high as no.9 in the world, but she has struggled with her fitness in the last few years. This season she has lost in the first round in both the French Open and the Australian open. At the Miami Open 2021, Petkovic beat Zhang Shuai of China, 7-5 6-1, in the first round.
