WTA Rankings 2020: Year-end Women’s Tennis World Rankings
The WTA tour 2020 concluded in November, with the Linz Open which was won by Belarusian, Aryna Sabalenka. This year witnessed two new Grandslam champions in the women’s circuit with Sofia Kenin winning the Australian Open 2020 and Iga Swiatek winning the French Open, later this year.
There have been several changes in the WTA rankings this year. Ashleigh Barty ended the year as the world number one in spite of missing almost the entire year due to injury. Among the major surprises in the top 20 rankings, was Iga Swiatek who captured the Roland Garros title which earned her a 17th spot in the world rankings. Serena Williams dropped outside the top ten rankings and ended the year on the 11th place.
A look into the top five rankings
Ashleigh Barty ended the year as the world number one, in spite of missing most of the season. Simona Halep was ranked second in the world, just ahead of Naomi Osaka. Osaka won the US Open 2020 title which boosted her rankings. She could have finished higher, but she did not compete in a single tournament after winning her second title at the flushing meadows.
Sofia Kenin made a huge leap in her rankings as she ended the year as the world number four. The American won the Australian Open title and also finished as the runner-up at the French Open, losing to Iga Swiatek. It was a good year for the American but she could have finished higher if she would have been a little more consistent. Elina Svitolina, the Ukrainian took the fifth spot, after another year on tour where she could not claim a Grandslam title.
Bianca Andreescu holds her ground in the top ten rankings
Bianca Andreescu held her ground in the top ten rankings, in spite of missing the entire year due to injury. The Canadian has not played a single match after the WTA Tour Finals in 2019. The US Open 2019 champion still held her ground in the top ten rankings and ended the year on the seventh spot. Karolina Pliskova, Petra Kvitova, Kiki Bertens are among the other names in the top ten rankings.
Aryna Sabalenka ended the year with back to back titles at Ostrava and Linz which pushed her into the top ten rankings. The Belarusian ended the year on the tenth spot. Among some other names, Serena Williams ended the year on a disappointing 11th place. Her last tournament of the year was the French Open where she had to withdraw midway through the tournament owing to an injury.
Victoria Azarenka and Iga Swiatek were possibly the biggest winners in terms of rankings in 2020. Azarenka, unseeded at the US Open, won the Cincinnati Open and finished as the runner up at the US Open, which gave her a year-end ranking of world number 13. Iga Swiatek came out of nowhere and clinched the French Open in some style, without dropping a single set and ended the year on the 17th place.
