The WTA tour witnessed some of the tennis stars calling it a day and announcing their retirement from tennis. In this article, we will have a look at some of the players on WTA tour who retired from tennis this year, after years of achieving success on the professional circuit.

Caroline Wozniacki retired from tennis after losing in the third round of the Australian Open 2020 to Ons Jabeur. Her highlight of the career came in 2018, when she won her maiden Grandslam title at the Australian Open. At the time of retirement, the former World number one said that she wanted to achieve things off court. However, another reason which she did not mention could be her diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Maria Sharapova’s retirement came as a surprise to many tennis fans as she was just 32 years old. However, the Russian could never reach the level she was at, after she returned from her ban in 2017. Sharapova won five Grandslam titles, the last one being the French Open 2014 title. The Russian has won each of the four majors, completing her Career Slam.

At the time of retirement she said, “I’m new to this, so please forgive me. Tennis—I’m saying goodbye…“In giving my life to tennis, tennis gave me a life. I’ll miss it every day. I’ll miss the training and my daily routine.”

Julia Goerges

Julia Georges

Julia Georges announced her retirement just two weeks before her 32nd birthday. The German had a career high ranking of nine and won seven titles in her career. At the time of announcing her retirement, Goerges said, “When I started playing tennis at the age of five, I would never have thought that we would go such a long way together…I always knew how I would feel when it is time to say goodbye to you, and that moment has arrived. I am ready to close the tennis chapter of my life and open a new one.”

Ekaterina Makarova

Ekaterina Makarova, was a great singles and a doubles player. She reached two Grandslam finals as a singles player, however the highlight of her career came while playing doubles. The Russian won 3 Grandslam Doubles titles. She announced her retirement on Instagram and did not give a specific reason.
