WTA Calendar Update 2021: Cincinnati, Toronto among nine tournaments added to the schedule

The WTA Tour has added nine more tournaments to it’s schedule for the 2021 season. The update calendar now includes two more 1000 events, one 500, six 250 tournaments and an extended series of 125 events.
The WTA had already released the first 27 weeks of it’s calendar, which was rolled out in phases owing to the covid-19 pandemic. The organizing body plans to hold atleast one tournament each week, leading up to the US Open 2021.
“We are especially appreciative of the commitment in which all the tournaments and players have put forth in order to operate efficiently and safely during these challenging times,” said Steve Simon, CEO and Chairman of WTA Tennis.
The updated schedule for the 2021 season
Among the major adjustments to the 2021 schedule, Internationaux de Strasbourg has been moved to May 24, after French Open was postponed by one week. The WTA tour makes it’s return to Poland, as Iga Swaitek is all set to take part in her home event in July. The 250 event will be played on clay courts in Gydnia in July.
In addition to the Cincinnati Open, another 1000 event will take place in Ohio in lead-up to the US Open. The two 1000 events will be played in consecutive weeks in August.
The provisional calendar reflects changes from the previous season including:
- Week 20 (May 17) –Anning, China moves to Belgrade, Serbia (2021 only)
- Week 21 (May 24) – Strasbourg moves to week 21 with Roland Garros taking place in weeks 22-23
- Week 23 (June 7) – Nottingham under discussion, update forthcoming
- Week 28 (July 12) – WTA 250 tournament in Bucharest, Romania moves to Budapest, Hungary
- Week 28 (July 12) – WTA 250 Prague moves from May to the summer and changes from clay to hardcourt
- Week 29 (July 19) – Washington, DC moves to Gdynia, Poland and changes from hardcourt to red clay
- Week 34 (August 23) – New WTA 250 hardcourt event in Cleveland, Ohio
