Coco Gauff will face Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the Round of 16 of the Wuhan Open. The American star has been on an excellent run of form recently, winning nine of her last ten matches and also a second title of the season. She last suffered a defeat in the fourth round of the US Open against fellow American Emma Navarro.
While Gauff has begun to find her rhythm, Kostyuk has yet to win any title this season. However, she has shown some consistent performances this season that have seen her gain entrance into the WTA Top 20.

Coco Gauff began the season by winning the Adelaide International and Australian Open. After that, she struggled to produce a consistent display on the court. That led her to a title drought for eight months. At the China Open final on Sunday (October 6), Gauff finally broke her title duck after beating Karolina Muchova in straight sets.
However, part of her recent performance is a result of her partnership with coach Matt Daly after parting ways with Brad Gilbert. The collaboration has straightaway produced spectacular results. At Wuhan Open, she continued with her good performance beating Viktoriya Tomova 6-1, 6-2 in the second round.
On the other hand, Marta Kostyuk began the year the same way Gauff did. The Ukrainian reached the quarterfinals of the Australian and semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters. However, she had a spark of great results at the Stuttgart Open, finishing as runners-up after losing to Elena Rybakina in a straight set. She exited in the third round of the US Open after losing to Emma Navarro in three sets.
She participated in the Korean Open, winning her two opening matches. But, failed to get past the quarterfinals after losing to Diana Shnaider 6(7)-7, 3-6. At the Wuhan Open, she opened her account with a 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(2) over Elina Avanesyan. She then earned an easy walkover after Amanda Anisimova withdrew from the match.

They have climbed their way up the ladder by playing at the top level consistently and have often come up against each other. They have met three times in their careers, with Gauff leading the head-to-head record 2-1.
Their first meeting was back in 2022 at the Adelaide Open, and twice this season. However, Kostyuk won their last encounter in the quarterfinals of the Stuttgart Open. The Ukrainian beat Gauff 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(6) in April. Gauff will be seeking to earn revenge when they meet again.
