Aryna Sabalenka has been in her best form since August. After beginning the year with two finals, she lost her rhythm before finding it again at the Cincinnati Open. She claimed her first US Open title after beating American Jessica Pegula in straight sets. However, in Wuhan, the 26-year-old is playing with enormous confidence. She opened her campaign with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Katerina Siniakova in the second round. She came from a set down to beat Yulia Putintseva 1-6, 6-4, 6-0, and then secured a straight sets win over Magdalena Frech. In the semifinals, she came from behind to beat Coco Gauff 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
On the other hand, Qinwen Zheng began the year like Sabalenka did but the only difference was that she failed to win a title. After finishing as runners-up at the Australian Open, her next final was at the Palermo Ladies Open in July. There, she beat Muchova in straight sets to win her first title of the year.
She kicked off her Wuhan Open campaign with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jaqueline Cristian. She came from behind to beat Leylah Fernandez 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 in the next round. She ended Jasmine Paolini’s run at the event with a three-set win in the quarterfinals. She faced her fellow compatriot Wang Xinyu in the semifinals, winning 6-3, 6-4 to book a place in the final.
