Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina will face off for the thirteenth time on the court at the WTA 1000 tournament in Wuhan. The World No.1 is seeking to win the Wuhan Open for the fourth consecutive time in her career having gone 19 matches unbeaten at the tournament.

Rybakina has done well to bounce back from her poor run at the China Open, where she crashed out in the round of 32 after losing to Germany’s Eva Lys in three sets. Since arriving at the Wuhan Open, she’s yet to drop a set. A win for the Kazakh star over Sabalenka will push her for a spot at the WTA Finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Aryna Sabalenka vs. Elena Rybakina: Match Preview

The Wuhan Open is Aryna Sabalenka’s first tournament since winning the US Open in September. The 27-year-old suffered a minor injury en route to her triumph at the New York Grand Slam, which forced her to withdraw from the China Open in Beijing. She arrived at the Wuhan Open with a six-match unbeaten run.

The Belarusian star wasted no time in extending the unbeaten streak in the second round of the tournament, coming from a set down to beat Rebecca Sramkova in three sets. On Thursday (October 9), she needed just an hour and 15 minutes to beat No.16 seed Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-2.

On the other hand, Elena Rybakina failed to continue with her North American hard-court swing at the China Open. The Kazakhstan star had reached two consecutive WTA 1000 semi-finals at the Canadian Open and then at the Cincinnati Open. Also, she reached the round of 16 of the US Open before losing to Marketa Vondrousova.

At the China Open, she managed to win just one match before crashing out in the round of 32. But since arriving in Wuhan, she has not dropped a set. The 8th seed beat Jaqueline Cristian in her opening match, before triumphing over Beijing finalist Linda Noskova on Thursday, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open.

Aryna Sabalenka vs. Elena Rybakina: Match Prediction

Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina have a long history of meeting each other on the court. The duo first faced each other at a professional level in 2019. Sabalenka won their maiden clash 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, which became the first of her four three-set wins in a row, including the 2023 Australian Open final. However, the four-time Grand Slam champion leads their head-to-head record 7-5.

Notwithstanding, Rybakina has won five of their last eight meetings and leads their head-to-head record on outdoor hard courts 5-4. Their last meeting was at the Cincinnati Open quarter-finals in August, where Rybakina needed just an hour and fifteen minutes to beat the Belarusian star 6-1, 6-4.

The match length will likely determine the winner between Rybakina and Sabalenka; the former has won four of their five matches that ended in straight sets. The only time the Kazakh won in three sets was at the WTA Finals last year.

Match Prediction: Elena Rybakina to win in three sets
