Coco Gauff earned her place in the final of the Wuhan Open, her third WTA 1000 final of the season after overcoming Jasmine Paolini. The World No.3 is now set to take on her fellow compatriot Jessica Pegula in the championship match, where she will look to win her second title of the season.
Pegula stunned tournament favorites Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals, coming from a set down to beat the Belarusian star. The win was her first against the World No.1 after four consecutive losses on tour and her first of the season. Coco Gauff arrived at the Wuhan Open with the mindset of working more on her serve issues, which has been her major concern this year. She had failed to defend the China Open in Beijing, after reaching the semi-finals of the tournament. The American star lost the tie in straight sets against champion Amanda Anisimova.
However, Gauff opened her campaign in Wuhan with a convincing straight sets win over Moyuka Uchijima, dropping just one game. The French Open champion went on to beat Zhang Shuai and Laura Siegemund in straight sets. On Saturday (October 11), she defeated Jasmine Paolini 6-4, 6-3 to reach her first Wuhan Open final.
Jessica Pegula, on the other hand, had struggled on the court after winning the Bad Homburg Open, her third title of the season. The 31-year-old didn’t enjoy a good run at the Canadian and Cincinnati Open, but did well to reach the semi-finals of the US Open before losing to Aryna Sabalenka in the semi-finals.
Nonetheless, she continued with her good performance at the China Open and was close to earning a place in the final before losing to Linda Noskova in three sets. She has beaten Hailey Baptiste, Ekaterina Alexandrova, Katerina Siniakova, and Aryna Sabalenka to reach the final of the Wuhan Open.

Coco Gauff will face Jessica Pegula in an all-American final at the Wuhan Open. Both players are seeking to win the title for the first time in their careers. However, this is Gauff’s fourth final of the year, while this is Pegula’s sixth final. Also, Gauff has won just one title this season, while Pegula has claimed three already.
Both players are yet to win a WTA 1000 title this season. Pegula played excellent tennis in the semi-finals against Aryna Sabalenka in the thrilling clash. She came from a set down to beat the World No.1 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(2), ending the three-time champion’s 20-match unbeaten streak at the Wuhan Open.
