WWE abandons trademark on Brock Lesnar

WWE abandons trademark on Brock Lesnar
The Beast Incarnate Brock Lesnar

The Beast Incarnate last made an appearance for WWE at Wrestlemania 36. Lesnar lost his WWE Championship that night to Drew McIntyre. Brock Lesnar’s contract with WWE has since expired. Neither has Lesnar signed a new contract with WWE nor has he signed with any other promotion. Lesnar is currently a free agent.

WWE had filed an application in January in an attempt to trademark thename “Brock Lesnar”. In March, the request was denied by USPTO. The reason for denial being WWE required a written consent from Lesnar, in order to move ahead with the trademark application. WWE was given six months, from March, to get the written permission.

The deadline expired in September, and the announcement of the same came in October. According to the trademark law, the applicant (WWE, in this case) require a written permission before trademarking the name of a particular individual.

Expiration of double deal between Lesnar and WWE

Brock Lesnar

WWE usually signs multiple deals with their wrestlers. In Lesnar’s case, two deals were signed.  One which dealt with in-ring competition. The other dealt with the merchandise. Currently, both these deals have expired. As a consequence, WWE has pulled off all the Lesnar merchandise from their websites.

There are rumors about Vince McMahon being interested in bringing Lesnar back around Wrestlemania 37. But as Heyman mentioned, it will take something really interesting to bring Lesnar back to WWE.
