Ever since WWE got rid of ex-EVP of Talent Relations Dan Ventrelle, the company’s been nimble on their feet when it comes to renewing contracts in advance. These operations are currently being carried out by Chris Legentil and Matt Altman. Having said that, they’re seemingly close to agreeing on terms with the reigning World Heavyweight Champion Gunther about a new deal.
Per Fightful Select, it’s believed to be done by this year. The report adds that it’d be a long-term, multi-year contract. Those at WWE are said to be thrilled by The Ring General’s in-ring performances and media commitments. Having joined the main roster in April 2022, Gunther‘s transition from being the most dominant mid-card champion to now a world champion has been pleasing to many.
He’s held the Intercontinental Championship for a record-breaking 666 days. Back in August, he overcame Damian Priest to capture the top prize on Monday Night Raw. Only Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes have been able to pin Gunther’s shoulders to the mat. Losing to Zayn at WrestleMania XL only ticked him off even more.
However, since going down to Rhodes last month at Crown Jewel, the Austrian hasn’t been the same. A semblance of self-doubt has crept into his system for the first time in his WWE career. It could’ve cost him the world title against Priest in their rematch at Survivor Series: WarGames.
But thanks to Finn Balor, who took Damian out with a Coup de Grace. It softened up the former Judgment Day member for Gunther. However, the latter wasn’t elated about that. He even planted a boot to Balor’s face before choking out a fallen Priest to retain the gold.
Gunther gears up for a major challenge at Saturday Night’s Main Event
There’s no rest for the weary. After hanging on to his world title by a thread, Gunther’s now set to put it on the line against Finn Balor. This week on Raw, the Irishman told the 37-year-old that he owes him a title match after what transpired at Survivor Series.
The Imperium leader affirmed that he didn’t ask for Finn’s help. As a matter of fact, the Austrian wanted to beat Damian Priest on his own, but Balor took that away from him. Gunther turned down Balor’s demand at first and instead beat his cohort Dominik Mysterio later on Raw.
After the match, Balor blindsided the erstwhile Walter and laid him out. Eventually, it was made official by Raw GM Adam Pearce that the two will duke it out at Saturday Night’s Main Event for the World Heavyweight Championship.
