“Fake fights for fun”: What transpired after Ronda Rousey dissed professional wrestling?

Rousey

Ronda Rousey is a professional wrestler, former judoka and a former mixed martial artist as well. She gained massive popularity after she became the first American woman to earn an Olympic medal in Judo – she had won the bronze medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Post this she started pursuing her career in mixed martial arts and went on to become the inaugural female Champion as well as the first female fighter to be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

In 2018, the “Baddest Woman on the Planet” signed a contract with WWE and was surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble 2018. Being the star performer that she is, Rousey was massively pushed by the company and she went on to win the Raw Women’s Championship after she pinned Alexa Bliss at Summerslam 2018.

After holding the title for 232 days, she lost the title to Becky Lynch at Wrestlemania 35. This was a Winner Takes All Triple Threat match which also included Charlotte Flair. Surprisingly, this was also the last time Rousey was seen on WWE. While she had a massive time on WWE, Rousey felt that the fans didn’t appreciate her enough and this led to a massive controversy.

In 2020, Ronda Rousey appeared on Steve-O’s “Wild Ride” podcast where she called WWE “fake fights for fun”. This caused a massive uproar not only among the fans but even from her colleagues in WWE who took offense from Rousey’s comments. But things didn’t just end there – Rousey put out a tweet too, pointing out the difference between professional wrestling and real fights.

“Anyone who is outraged by me calling pro wrestling “fake fights for fun” has never been in a REAL fight. While you all are tip toeing around bruising some pro wrestlers’ huge soft egos – no one is thinking about all the REAL fighters you’re insulting when pretending pro wrestling is somehow on the same level of realism. Yes, I understand, wrestling 300 days a year for years on end is incredibly tough on the body and a difficult profession-but do you know what would happen if you got in 300 REAL fights in a year? You would be dead.” – tweeted Ronda Rousey, further enraging the WWE Universe.

WWE Superstars were unimpressed by Ronda Rousey’s comments

The comments Ronda Rousey made didn’t go down well with the WWE Superstars. One of the first Superstars to react was Alexa Bliss – who had worked quite a lot with Rousey during her time on WWE. She shared a clip from her documentary and made a cheeky comment – “Hm. Was out for almost a year. Must have been ‘fake’.”

Surprisingly, everyone wasn’t against what Rousey had said. In fact, Rousey got support from one of the biggest professional wrestlers ever – CM Punk, who claimed to “absolutely love” what Rousey had said!

Initially, the fans believed that Rousey claiming WWE to be “fake” would be part of a storyline – as she was expected to appear for the company once again. But that never turned out to be true as WWE still awaits the return of Ronda Rousey. It would still be interesting to see whether WWE decides to incorporate these comments in her storylines.
