A tear of anterior cruciate ligaments usually takes about 6-9 months to heal up after surgery. That’s the exact time frame announced by WWE when Ilja Dragunov tore his ACL while wrestling Gunther at a live event in September. However, it seems like The Mad Dragon is making unreal progress in his rehab.
In fact, as per Corey Brenann of Fightful, the 31-year-old star has been spotted at the WWE Performance Center. The report added that Dragunov participated in training sessions, implying that he’s nearing his in-ring return. Furthermore, the Russian-born German wrestler wasn’t wearing any injury-specific equipment either.
Hardly four months have passed since Ilja picked up the injury. And needless to say, he has made significant strides en route to recovery. As things stand, there’s no concrete word on what WWE’s plans are for him. Also, it’s worth noting that even though he’s back working out at the PC, that doesn’t guarantee he’s returning immediately.
The Unbesiegbar last competed on Raw in triple-threat action against Dragon Lee and Dominik Mysterio. Before getting sidelined, WWE teased Ilja getting into the crosshairs of The Judgment Day. However, before the story could advance, Dragunov got hurt. One would feel that the former NXT Champion was marred with an injury at the worst possible time.
It was almost certain that he’d have to sit out of WrestleMania 41, which he still could. But knowing that he has resumed bumping in the ring, it might not take that long for him to plot his on-screen return to WWE. WrestleMania is about four months away, and there’s enough time for Dragunov to regain his mobility that’d be enough for him to get medical clearance from WWE.
WWE fans are amazed at Ilja Dragunov’s stunning recovery process
As Ilja Dragunov has hit the Performance Center just four months after an ACL tear, the fans couldn’t be more happy about it. The news is being celebrated in wrestling circles on X as the following reactions entail.
As always, the fans have found unique ways of expressing their jubilation. One posted a clip from Drew McIntyre‘s “I prayed for it and it happened” promo. There was also a GIF of The Rock getting goosebumps as a way to rave about Dragunov’s status.
Some are even speculating that The Mad Dragon might return at the Royal Rumble in about two weeks time. The delirious folks on X still couldn’t believe how Ilja has managed to pull it off, joking that he’s not human.
