Mustafa Ali faced Gunther at Night Of Champions for the Intercontinental Championship in a losing effort. The Ring General has held on to the title for more than 400 days. Ali stated in an interview that it would have been the right time to end the reign, given that it was in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which served as a “home-field advantage”.
However, a news report online misinterpreted the high flyer’s quotes. The article’s title was brought in to question as it suggested the complete opposite, according to him. Mustafa blasted the news article via Twitter, saying that “you guys really falling for s***y click bait headlines, eh?”. Clearly, he was fed up with online sites spreading misinformation.
In a reply to this quote, Mustafa Ali further emphasized that he meant it was an “incredible” opportunity for an underdog story to take place at the May event. According to him, it had been a while since WWE had done something similar to that. Therefore, his match was a potential time and place to showcase a genuine surprise. Mustafa Ali has had an up-and-down run on the main roster as exemplified recently by jumping to NXT soon after his grudge match against the Imperium Leader. Meanwhile, the latter is set to face Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam for the Intercontinental title.
What is Mustafa Ali currently doing on NXT?
Mustafa Ali has been regularly appearing on the NXT brand for the past few months. After losing to Gunther at the Night Of Champions premium live event, he used his “free agent” status to appear on the Gold brand. Since then, Ali has been involved in the North American title picture.
The 37-year-old has yet to win a championship in the company. At the most recent Great American Bash event, the former Retribution leader failed to win the gold in a triple-threat match against Wes Lee and champion Dominik Mysterio. Afterward, he appeared on the next episode confronting the third-generation superstar, insinuating he wasn’t finished with him.
Ali looked destined to be a future World Champion during his early run in the WWE. Unfortunately, an injury before the Elimination Chamber 2019 pay-per-view ruined plans for a WWE Championship win at that year’s WrestleMania. Subsequently, he never reached his full potential, going through various character changes and unexplained absences from television.
