The wrestling community was in shock after NJPW announced that Kazuchika Okada would be leaving the promotion on January 31. As such, rumors began to flow online about which major promotion would land the former IWGP World Champion. Many fans perceive the major American promotions (AEW, TNA, and WWE) as possible destinations for him. A recent report has shed more light on details regarding the Jacksonville-based company’s pursuit.
According to Dave Meltzer of WON, AEW has made the stronger first offer to Kazuchika Okada. However, no contract has been officially signed as of now. Meanwhile, WWE is still in the running, as internal belief was that the company was ahead before. Moreover, due to the idea, it could be easy to persuade the 36-year-old about the more lucrative American market.
At the moment, the Tony Khan-led promotion is seemingly the likely choice for the Japanese legend. Okada has competed in AEW on previous occasions due to the partnership with NJWP. Also, fans have pointed out that he has several accomplices in the company, as the possibility of working with the likes of Kenny Omega and Will Osperay can play a key factor in his decision.
Tony Khan posted a possible hint hours before NJPW’s announcement. The AEW CEO claimed that 2024 would be a great year for his promotion. After signing Osperay and the reported acquisition of Mercedes Mone, it can be easily said that Khan would be happy with the start of the year. It will be interesting to see how WWE makes its next move in signing Kazuchika Okada.
Possible opponents for Kazuchika Okada in WWE
Despite the reports, Triple H will continue to push hard to bring Kazuchika Okada to WWE. The CCO is aware that the Rainmaker has dreamt of competing at the Showcase of Immortals, WrestleMania. In fact, rumors suggested that Shinsuke Nakamura‘s recent character change was related to bringing in Okada.
Triple H allegedly wanted to change the perspective of outside talent when it comes to international stars in WWE. At the moment, it is difficult to see Okada debuting in the Stamford-based promotion, but fans can’t rule out the possibility as well. If the 36-year-old joins the company, he can compete in ‘dream’ matches against the likes of Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns.
In addition to that, fans have anticipated Okada as the possible answer to The Ring General, Gunther‘s dominant IC Title reign. Furthermore, this bout can take place as early as WrestleMania 40 if the former IWGP Champion signs with WWE. Needless to say, wrestling fans are waiting to see what lies ahead for the Rainmaker, as he is set to become a free agent soon.
