“Passion was sucked out”- Athena says that her love for wrestling was drained out after her release from wwe
Athena giving an interview
Athena was thought to be one of the rising stars in WWE but her release from WWE in 2021 has amazed the WWE Universe. Athena had impressed the WWE Universe with her wrestling moves especially her striking ability, with many calling her a “Bada**”. She was introduced to wrestling by her grandfather, who used to tune in to RAW is WAR and SmackDown during her visits to him.
Athena began her wrestling training in 2007 and first trained under the wrestler skandor akbar. The same year, she also trained under Booker T at his promotion Reality of Wrestling. Athena began wrestling regularly from 2008 and wrestled for various promotions such as Anarchy Championship Wrestling (ACW), Shimmer Women Athletes, Women Superstars Uncensored (WSU) until 2015.
Athena is now signed to AEW as a regular performer
Athena was signed to WWE in 2015 and was sent to the performance center for training. She made her in-ring debut with WWE from NXT Brand and went on to wrestle until 2018 on that brand. During her time at NXT, she became a 1 time NXT Women’s Champion.
Athena made her main roster debut in 2018 on RAW and was transferred to smack down in 2019 as a result of superstar shake up. During this time she began her pursuits for the Women’s Championship and participated in various live events such as Royal Rumble, Money in the Bank and Battle royal but was unsuccessful in it. She never got an individual opportunity to fight for the women’s Championship.
Athena returned to the NXT Brand in 2020 and began hounding for the NXT Women’s Championship. She desired to win it for the second time but was unsuccessful. Athena was released from WWE in 2021 and her six year tenure came to an end.
During a recent interview with Steve Fall of NBC Sports, Athena said that she worked continuously for six years in WWE and when she left the company she sat idle for three months and tried to figure out what she wanted to do in future, she said that she wasn’t sure of going back to wrestle again. Athena said that wrestling again would feel like physical labor and that’s what drained out her passion for wrestling.
“Over the course of like six, seven years with WWE it became work. When I like left it was like I got to sit at home for three months and just kind of figure out what I wanted to do, and I didn’t necessarily know if I wanted to wrestle again it was just like ah okay because I was afraid that I would go like, and it would feel like work and so like on some level yeah I feel like the passion was sucked out.”
Fortunately, Athena has regained her passion for wrestling and has debuted on the promotion AEW. She made her in-ring debut on AEW Rampage and won her first match against kiera hogan via pinfall.
