Gunther will officially become the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion on September 7. He has cemented himself as one of the greatest titleholders in history. The Austrian has delivered on his reputation, which he garnered during his time in NXT UK. He’s yet to be pinned on the main roster. Superstars have come and gone, but Gunther remained at the top.
He has come a long way, which is why the ending of his title reign needs to be done correctly. Booker T recently discussed who could be that name to potentially dethrone The Ring General when the time’s right. Shutting down Austin Theory as an option on Reality of Wrestling, King Booker was quick to utter LA Knight as the one. The WWE veteran has been very vocal about his liking for The Megastar.
The NXT commentator said that fans are already behind LA Knight and he could make them care for the title. Also, a potential feud with Gunther will enhance Knight more as a babyface, as the fans are going to rain down on the Imperium leader. “He’s a guy that definitely could step into that spot, and you could get behind him. And then, of course, with GUNTHER, that dude, you’re going to hate him,” he said.
Right now, LA Knight is involved in a rivalry with The Miz, which might culminate at Payback. It will be interesting to see where the former Eli Drake goes from there. Well, the ongoing draft seems to be dead as both Knight and Miz have traveled across brands. That said, Knight coming to RAW for a feud with Gunther won’t be as surprising as one would say.
Gunther lost his first singles match on the main roster this week
It took over an year for someone to break the clutches of The Ring General. On this week’s Raw, Chad Gable earned a count-out victory against Gunther. In a hard-hitting affair, both men gave their all with the Intercontinental Title up for grabs. During the closing moments, Gable suplexed Gunther into the timekeeper’s area. Chad quickly went back into the ring before the referee could count 10.
Although he handed the the Ring General his first ever singles loss on the main-roster, Gable didn’t win the title. Next week, the 37-year-old Olympian is set to face Ludwig Kaiser. Clearly, the beef between Gable and Gunther ain’t over. They’re probably going to run it back for the gold at WWE Payback. It might be Gunther’s final test before taking over Honky Tonk Man’s 454 day record.
